Pegan Pick: Kite Hill Almond Yogurt

At the beginning of my functional medicine journey, it was recommended that I complete a food sensitivity test. The phlebotomist removed what felt like 900 vials of blood, and three weeks later I was able to see my individual reactions to over 80 different foods. Much to my dismay, I was reacting to almonds at the time and had to give up all almond-based products (almond milk, almond cream cheese, almond butter, straight up almonds). I followed a strict vegan diet before transitioning to the functional medicine diet and developed a love for these almond-based products; it was so tough to remove them all!

Almost a year later, I am thankfully able to eat almonds and almond-based products again. It’s a good thing – my FAVORITE almond product manufacturer FINALLY created a plain, unsweetened, artisan almond milk yogurt.

Pegan Pick #8!

My mother makes the best salad dressing on the face of the planet. I’m sure you think I’m exaggerating, but really though. Olive oil + red wine vinegar + onion powder + magic and all of a sudden your whole family is standing over the salad in the kitchen before it even makes it’s way to the dining room table. Once I introduced it to my friends in college? Game over. I was summoned to make “Nanc’s dressing” for every salad and sub purchased from that point forward.

Why Collagen & Pegan Pick #5!

I’m no stranger to protein powder. My all time favorite in both powder and pre-made form is hands down Orgain. I drank their vegan chocolate pre-made protein shake pretty much every single morning from the moment I switched to a vegan diet until I switched over to my pegan (paleo + vegan hybrid) diet five months ago. But, the Orgain option contains sugar, and even though it is a small amount, I can’t add it to my shakes any longer.

My Pegan Pick #3!

Not to be overly dramatic, but my world literally fell apart when I was told I had to remove almond products from my already restrictive diet. At the time, I was five weeks into my functional medicine journey and pretty much living off of almond milk, almond cream cheese, almonds, and almond butter.

My favorite was the almond butter. I’d take a spoonful (or two) directly to the face after dinner as a “dessert” type of signal to my body. Seemed like as good enough substitute for actual dessert that I was going to find on this diet…

And like that, it was gone! I truly thought I was going to get foods added back in at that time, not more taken out!

…I told you this was going to be dramatic.

My Pegan Pick #2!

Last week, I mentioned that the functional medicine detox diet I’ve been following for the past 2.5+ months also resulted in a number of new (and delicious) products to try. I’ll be the first to admit, I was super skeptical when my dietitian suggested edamame & mung bean pasta upon my first visit. First of all, I’m Italian. I love my Grandma Connie’s homemade pasta more than anything else in the whole world. How could a pasta made of beans stand a chance?

My Pegan Pick #1!

In shifting from a vegan diet to a pegan (paleo + vegan) diet over the past few months, I’ve been introduced to some really great products that helped with this lifestyle change. I want to start sharing them on a weekly basis, in case you ever have an interest in switching to a dairy-free, gluten-free, meat-on-the-side, sugar-free diet, or if you just like trying something new!
