Today was my second follow up appointment with my functional medicine doctor, and third appointment with the nutritionist. Both seem really really impressed by how well my skin has responded to our dietary changes and other interventions. The general consensus is that mostly scarring is left, and unless I want to pay for dermatological treatments to speed up the process, the body will slowly repair the skin on its own.
I will write a more complete post when I receive the results of my blood work, as the doctor sent me to retest my candida, mycoplasma, and vitamin d levels. She suspects that my mycoplasma levels may have rebounded since my round of antibiotics because I’ve been unable to take a deep breath for the past two(ish) weeks. We have a plan in place to address this concern, but we’re waiting on the test results. When I receive my results, I’ll give you the full run down!
Similarly, my nutritionist recommended reintroducing a few more foods, but will likely relax my diet even further if the candida results are at a favorable level. In the meantime, I can complete the food introduction process for the following:
- 1/2 cup oats (must be certified gluten free)
- 6 almonds
- 1/2 cup black beans
- 1/2 cup kidney beans
- 3 ounces of pork (only from Fresh Fork Market)
Basically, I have to eat the food item as a morning snack on day one, not eat it on day two, eat it as an afternoon snack on day three, and not eat it on day four. If I make it through the four days without any adverse reaction, I am fine to incorporate for good!
I also can add back in fermented foods, gluten free bread / wraps (must be 100% whole grain), and can increase my servings of fruit from 2 to 3 occasionally…
All in all, it was a great visit! I even found out that I likely will “graduate” from functional medicine after my next appointment (August 18). In that case, I will be responsible for following through with my diet and lifestyle changes, and only make a functional medicine visit once per year.
I’ll let you know how the reintroduction goes and will post the game plan as soon as I receive my blood test results. So pumped!
