Day Nineteen.

Hello, my name is Jessica and its been nineteen (long, painful, torturous) days since my last vegan baked good.

The goal is to figure out the root cause of my cystic acne with the help of functional medicine doctors and nutritionists. My first, and long-awaited, appointment was four hours long, after which I had a totally new diet to follow. While I complete a ton of blood work and other tests, my nutritionist would like me to reset my diet completely. So, from February 1 until the foreseeable future, I am to follow a paleo + vegan hybrid diet (pegan, if you will) in addition to removing other possible triggers from my diet. The list  of “NO” food groups includes:

  • Legumes
  • Grains (of any kind)
  • Dairy
  • Starchy vegetables
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Fruits (other than a select handful of low-glycemic fruits deemed acceptable)
  • Caffeine
  • Soda
  • Sweeteners (natural or artificial)

I also have to document my meals, macros, and hit a goal range of servings of each allowed food group every day, to be shared with my nutritionist at our next meeting.

Soda? I haven’t indulged in more than an occasional soda pop (#buffalo) since high school. Dairy? No problem. I haven’t had a dairy product since March 2014. Coffee? My former love affair with coffee ended over the summer, and I can take it or leave it at this point. Alcohol? I’ll get over it. Starchy vegetables? I’m eating enough vegetables that I don’t miss these, not even a little. Grains? I do love bread, but its not so bad…

But sugar? No sugar? None? Zero? I feel like I’m crying inside all day, every day. I’m craving sugary foods I don’t even eat…I actually almost snatched an oreo out of one of my student’s hands just yesterday. I wish I was kidding.

I’m a total grouch: to my boyfriend, to my boss, to my colleagues, to my students. But, the cravings are getting better. And I would do pretty much anything at this point to fix my face. I’d also do anything for a vegan cupcake, but still.

I’ll start sharing my meals, macros, and my progress toward living without sugar (and lots of other things) soon, just in case you’re ever in need of elimination diet ideas!
